With over 40 years as an athlete, coach, trainer, and student of speed science, David Washington brings to bear decades of expertise, and a passion for technically precise achievement of speed goals for elite-minded clients.
David’s calm demeanor and patience belie his relentless commitment to helping athletes isolate, re-build and optimize their technique, and power chains. His mastery of body mechanics is learned, comprehensive and granular, honoring his belief that speed is an art, that the physics of the body must be respected and understood to be properly trained.
While earning his B.A. in Economics at the Virginia Military Institute, David was a two-time conference athlete of the year and an all-American, en route to induction in VMI’s alma mater Hall of Fame. He also qualified for the 1980 United States Olympic trials. David’s progress as an athlete mirrored his patient, careful dialogue with the science of speed.
David’s athletic excellence proved to be transferable during his eight-year tenure coaching the fastest track team in the nation at Junipero Serra High School. David’s teams won 10 California Interscholastic Federation titles (two girls, eight boys), led the nation in the 4x100 in back-to-back seasons, and set the California record in the 4x400 – still the second-fastest time in U.S. high school history. David coached men who would become NFL standouts while being named Coach of the Year for the South Bay three times.
David and his wife, Marcela, started a Los Angeles company called SprintPhyt which focuses on teaching clients the mechanics and benefits of sprint. David also joined forces with STARS, a high performance training company, where he specializes in helping NFL prospects maximize their performance in the 40 at the combine. Teaching and learning remain a tightly-coiled process for David, whose professional journey has included speed mentorship of the Los Angeles Rams’ Robert Woods, Marqise Lee of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Seahawks Paul Richardson and Neiko Sharp. David also applied his kinematic expertise in working with Olympic snowboarder Shaun White.
Woods, who David began coaching as a ninth-grader, and Richardson, who transferred to Junipero Serra as a junior, teamed with George Farmer and became part of the fastest relay team in the country there.
And Woods, who worked with David – or ‘Wash,’ as the Rams’ every-down home run threat calls him – after two surgeries for six weeks, two hours a day, improved his speed, balance, endurance, core strength and explosiveness prior to signing a major contract extension.
In Woods’ words, training with David led to “big change, big results.”
David earned his Master’s degree in Education at Loyola Marymount University. He has certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and Coaching Levels I and II from USA Track and Field in Speed.
